Check Engine Light

I pushed the gas a little too far today, and nearly ran out of gas. I sputtered on the exit ramp, but got me to the station (DTE was reading 3 miles). When it sputtered the 'Check Engine' light came on, and now is one whenever I operate the car. Is there a way to kill the light? I would hate to have to bring this in to the dealer just to reset the light.
Any help?
Thanks
Tom
