I've had cars with both levers and knobs. I prefer the knob because there's more granularity in the adjustment and it is easier to adjust whilst at speed. (Although both hands should be on the wheel whilst moving for safety.)

I just picked up my new 9-3 SE a couple of weeks ago and asked about the upshift light. The service manager said it cannot be disabled, although he did switch off the DRL. I have read here that you can physically remove the bulb, but it requires disassembling the dash. It sounds very involved.

I actually find that the light is helpful in reminding me that I'm not in top gear on the freeway as I tend to listen to loud music. Aside from that, I don't really notice it.
