Steve,
I am in the middle of purchasing a 2001 9-3 5dr base, manual, red w roof and cloth heated seats. I emailed a bunch of dealers off the web but found but found three of the local dealers in my area were willing to meet their prices. I have been quoted $22,800 for the above car w $360 worth of dealer accessories that I wanted. That includes all fees from delivery to "documentation." It took some work of going back and forth, and some time on the phone, but I think it is a pretty good deal. W/o the accessories it is actualy a little under the edmunds TMV. (I figured the accessories are costing the dealer 60% of their retail value, but it may be 50%).
As a note, my biggest problem has been finding a red manual with or without a roof. One dealer even offered me a silver one at the same price.
The cars are an extremely good deal about now. The "actual" 4yr residual is 48% at that price, compared to 36% at MSRP.
Don't be discouraged if you can't get that price at a dealer, some just said they were not interested at that price. Others said its an impossible price. I probably would not try and get any less as the dealers need to make some profit - and all they are making here is holdback, plus maybe a marginal bonus if they are a high-volume dealer.
The dealers in Michigan have been great if you would consider a roadtrip.
Chris K
