Is it just me...or is it hard to read oil level

I have a '99 9-3 S which I bought (used) about 2 months ago. I have been trying to check the oil, and thought that a local service place had over-filled the oil (they charged me for 4.5 quarts). Drained about a quart out, and then could clearly see that it was low...filled it up again, and let it sit over night, and was hard pressed to get a consistant oil level reading on the "bulb" at the end of the dipstick. Anyone else having this problem ??
I know the capacity is 4.225 quarts, but I won't know exactly what is in there until I change the oil myself.
