I just drove a Volvo S70 wagon that my friend's mother has as a loander while her Toyota 4-Runner is in the shop. I have a 2000 9-3 SE, I MUCH prefer the Saab to the Volvo. The Volvo is solid, tight, and substantial feeling. It is, however, grossly underpowered and it took until 5000 RPM until it started to really go, and even then, it didn't go as hard as my 9-3 at 3000 rpm. The cargo room in the back is about the same size for each, with the Volvo maybe taking the cake because of the height compared to that of the 9-3 hatch. The Volvo I must say was quite comfortable, however the steering feel was very light, almost, dare I say, Toyota-ish. The interior of the Volvo was also so boring I was surprised that I didn't doze off during my 10 minute stint behind the wheel. The audio system in the Volvo is also not up to par with the 9-3 SE's kickin sound. All of the dials were boring matte grey plastic, with the button surrounding material being EXACTLY the same boring color as the knobs themselves. No wood on the dash, though there was some in the door handles. I have to give Volvo kudos on its cup-holder in the dash (very cool) and a nice back seat armrest that included cupholders (which is the only complaint I have on my Saab, that it hasn't enough cupholders). The Volvo is a good family car. Safe, solid and comfortable. If you want ANY FUN or originality, I would have to reccomend the Saab though. I love my 9-3 and the S70 is no competition in my book.
