Well, the problem of color as Dean relates was not the definitive reason for the change.
The original reason to go to the 6's was a cold weather issue of fouling. The example was that many USA owners liked to start their cars, then run back inside their house/apartment for a couple cups of coffee as their car warmed-up.
The other major reason for the 6 was to satisfy the customer complaint of hard-to-start/long cranking times on the 9-5.
Their is still the issue of plug application. 6 is NOT the plug for you if you tow a trailer in the mountains in 90F for example.
I ran 7's all last winter here in West Michigan--with ZERO problems. We had a BAD winter too and believe me those plugs did get a severe test.
I disagree about the color of the plug tip, just as I disagree about the color brown that motor oil becomes as miles are accumulated.
Your tech needs to read up on these bulletins--that have been out OVER a year.
My info is solid advice.
