Yes, I read the MT article. Also read Car and Driver's article with the S60, 9-3, C240, 325i, A4 2.8 and IS300 (what a list of names! I like cars with real names...like Passat or something along those lines). They ranked the S60 right up in the top portion of the group, behind the benchmark BMW and Audi and the almost benchmark Lexus. Fourth place, sure, but fourth behind some great driver's vehicles. I won't drive a BMW or a Lexus, and I won't be able to get a good deal on the new A4s. The Volvo was pretty far ahead of the Merc and the Saab- The Saab BARELY lost to the Merc! hehe.
The AWD would be great, but I'm trying to keep costs down, and there's not much snow where I live. Xenon headlamps? Don't really care. Sure, they look cool, and if the perfect S60 had them on it, I'd pay. But I don't really want them all that much. I'm only going to keep this car for a few years, which is why leasing sure looks good, and I want to keep it fairly cheap.
I'll drive the 2.4 and 2.4T. I don't want to drive the T5 because then I'll want it! (It was a serious mistake driving a Viggen a few months ago...wanted one so bad!!) I'm not concerned about the manual transmission- I'd really like one, but my girlfriend will want to drive, and I don't really want to have her learning on my NEW car. Plus, here in the city, the automatic is nice. The S60 has the optional manumatic transmission, which would be fun sometimes.
The 9-3 is distinctly dated, I'll attest to that. I bought one in '98 and thought that by the time I sold it a few months ago it had become a bit dated compared to the competition. But there's still a certain "Saab allure." I'm probably best off leasing an S60 and then buying the new 9-3 in a few years.
THanks for all the help so far, guys... I'm amazed at how many of ya'll would choose the S60 over the 9-3.
