I have an '01 9-3 SE... manual says you can run 87 octane but recommends at least 92 for maximum performance.
My take... Premium fuel for a premium car. I have run Mobil Super+ 93 octane since day 1 and have no regrets. The car runs great, idles smooth, gets good mileage and I know that long-term it is keeping things cleaner than regular unleaded.
A friend of mine disagrees and runs 87 in his SE... the turbo gauge won't leave the yellow zone, the engine knocks slightly under acceleration and idles rougher than mine when cold. Some people claim there is no difference... I disagree 100%.
I also disagree with the "switch every-other tank" theory. The Trionic engine management system does not adjust that quickly. If you search on this board, you will find references to this... Specifically to people who normally run high octane, switch to lower for a trip (in an attempt to save $) and then switch back to high octane afterwards expecting the performance of their car to instantly change... and then they wonder why their car won't perform like it did before. The adjustment is something that takes place over time and it does take awhile before the Trionic will "let" the engine go like it is designed to do.
My $.02 is that fuel is not something I screw around with. My feeling is that if I paid that much $ for a car... I should be able to cough up an extra couple of bucks at the pump at fill-up time to give it what it deserves and was designed to use. Like I said, just my $.02.
