The combined sale tax will be 15%.
Housing is very expensive because the commutes are so long for those who cannot cough up for a big mortage or lease.
The subway is great if you can locate to take advantage of it.
Food and shopping is great. You will find a greate selection of international foods in the basic grocery stores, and there are lots of serious food shops with international foods like you see in NYC.
The LCOB, Liquor Control Board of Ontario has a great selection, far better than you will find in almost any US shops. Folks in Ontario love to gripe about the prices, and taxes in general, but in many ways, having moved from Ontario to the US, many commodities in the US are greatly overpriced.
If you were to be working in Canada for a US company, and were paid in US dollars, that would be heaven.
When I vist Canada and things on sale; with US dollars things start to look very inexpensive.
You will become a Canadian resident and will no longer be a US resident. The greatest impact for this is for tax purposes. You could probably move without having a US passport. But I think that you should get one if you do not have one. You want good US ID wnen crossing back to visit in the US. The US border can difficult, especially now. A drivers licence and social security card mean nothing. Perhaps there is some kind of US ID card that you can get that will facilitate things.
Wou will not be able to bring any kind of firearms across the border in either direction.
If you move mid year, then your taxible income will be sort of 1/2 in each country and you will have to file tow returns. You will be low on the tax tables in each country and get a break on your taxes.
If you moved Jan 1, you would only have to file in one country. Not likely...
Can you get your employer to pick up the tab for a firm that does international returns etc. This will really help for the first transistional year.
Gansoline is expensive! One of the things that pays for the socialized medical plans.
Mortgage interest payments are not deductable.
The tax returns will seem familiar in concept.
