As I exited the highway the trans would NOT come out of 5th without some extreme effort. Parked it at home in the driveway and I could barely get it out of reverse. Took it to the dealer and they adjusted the shift linkages. The next day the problem was worse. This time it would barely come out of 4th and it was almost impossible to engage reverse. The dealer replaced the entire transmission. I believe they found a bad input shaft, if I remember correctly.
The new transmission seems to be much better. I've experienced the rough engagement that you're talking about on both transmissions but it is significantly better on the new one.
Do a search for my previous post for more trans replacement info. Look on either the 9-3 board or the Performance board, I can't remember which
