EJ, I agree with your stratagy but I was surprised at Chase since they essentially started the dialogue.
First, I got a letter in the mail saying someone from Chase would call me. A couple weeks later my answering machine had an automated message from Chase giving me a number to call about my end of lease options.
I called (Jan. 16,02) and result was my original topic post. Basically I told them if that is the price (21K), I will turn it back in in June 5 when lease is up, my excuse was that I could buy a used one with fewer miles for less money. They would not commit to a price when I asked what is that the best you can give me?
When I got home last night there was another automated message from Chase to call so maybe they are rethinking it. The automated message thing is a little annoying, tho.
My position is if I can get the car for a good price I will consider it - having it in my name would be nice. However, I have a company issued '01 Saab 9-3 SE Conv so it's not like I am desparate since I have my Saab "fix" and my personal lease car is presently under the mileage limit and in good condition so I can walk away from it for free if needed. For once I have the upper hand in one of these deals.
