I think this whole thread is a bit silly. for one thing, we really shouldn't be talking about the tranny as a whole. We should be talking about the torque converter and as long as the engine is running, you have power to the pump and sufficient lubrication to prevent any damage.
The arguement about towing isn't relevant. Coasting down a hill with the engine idling and towing a load (thereby placing additional strain on the driveline) present two completely different cases. Tony seems to be saying that if you coast in your auto, you should add tranny fluid. I disagree.
The arguement about brake wear also has little bearing. This depends entirely on driver management of the vehicle and could be negligible or heavy depending on what the driver does at the bottom of the hill.
If you want to coast, then coast. I personally don't see a great deal of fuel savings, and I don't see any potential to damage the vehicle. There's nothing in the manual or warranty literature about it and you *know* Saab would put in a warning if they thought they stood to lose money on it.
