I agree with pretty-much everything the other guys have said - assuming the boards got a little 'rocker' in it, nose down first should be fine. I carry mine on an old [sunburnt] Saab 99 and haven't got the roof bars for the 9-3 Viggen yet, but the distance should be about the same. My old Thule roof bars have got foam covers to protect the board from the bars and the Thule ratchet straps. Dunno what sort of board-bag you have, if you use one, but over here in Oz a good local brand is 'Big Mal' longboard bags and they're made with padding inside [like the plastic air-filled stuff in a Jiffy padded envelope - they may have patented the design I'm not sure but they're good] so with that stopping the strap cutting into the board and allowing it to grip something, it works well.
