There was a time when the rear end counted for a lot. That was
then and this is now.
I don't figure it counts as much anymore. Most designers
are happy just integrating the taillights with the otherwise
end of wind-tunnel requirements. I think I read somewhere that
most people want a perky rear end rather than one which slopes
down a la Mazda Millennia. Hence, non-functional 'spoilers'.
There were some clever things you could do with hatch rear ends.
There are designers doing things with the sculpted look first
highly noticeable on the Tiburon and a new BMW. Most are happy
with ground effects kits so far.
I was at the riverside beach today admiring the other kind of rear ends.
I must say I prefer the perky rear ends.
