You make it sound like the 9-3 engine is the same as a Saturn engine with a tubro on it. Not true. The NG9-3 engine shares only the block, head and a few anciallry components. Saab was allowed to design and source its own cams, cranks, valves, etc. etc.

When I went to Viggen Flight Academy, I asked the SaabUSA guy exactly this question. According to the SaabUSA guy, the old 2.0 and 2.3 designs were simply not going to meet emissions standards in a few years, and they had iron blocks. Using an aluminum block is a huge weight savings (translates to better performance). But Saab doesn't have the cash to start from scratch. So they took the GM ecotec engine block head, and a few other parts, but added their own stuff to it.

The GM Epsilon platform was designed in part by Saab, so there will be no repeat of the NG900, when Saab was desperate for a new model to replace the OG900 (which had solidered on in various slightly modified forms since the 99) but had no money to come up with a new platform, so they took a discarded Opel Vectra platform of late 1980's vintage. The design compromises inherent in using an old platform and designing something quickly to fit a Saab onto an old platform are numerous -- the tight footwells, the ignition being high up on the center console. Never mind making a car that could compete with state of the art stuff from BMW and Audi.

Platform sharing is universal now. Get used to it.
