Hi, I own a Saab 9-3 TID (MY2000) for nearly 2 months now and here are some information that might help :
>>>Driving experience of 2.2tid compared with 2.0 150/154HK <<<
I was not able to compare but according to a colleague who had this engine and who went in my car, left alone the engine sound at idle and when engine is cold, it's not ridiculous in performance and its torque is quite the same (torque is quite the same according to the catalog).
>>>Quality and durability of Saab’s first diesel? <<<
I know two people who are above 100 000 kms without any trouble and have seen ads for sale at 150 000 / 200 000 kms. I don't know how far they can go but with a normal maintenance it should last long.
>>>In 2001 catalog the fuel consumption is lower than in the 1998 catalog of what’s appear to be the same 2.2 tid engine. Have they done anything with the engine control from 1998 to 2001 model year to reduce fuel consumption? <<<
At least on the 9-3 2.2 TID sold in France, the engine power went from 115HP to 125HP in 2001. There was some light modifications done on the engine, not only some chipset programming. This engine have a slightly better gas consumption but according to what I've heard, it burns more oil. Performance are quite the same (torque, top speed)
>>>What to look for when buying a used Saab diesel? <<<
Check the car maintenance records in the book, and call the garage who did the maintenance. The car I bought had his book complete with all the work done at the right kilometers, all at the same garage. I called this garage and they searched for the car in their computer in order to tell me all the historic data. As I don't know a lot in car mechanic, it's helpful to process this way. Also, look how the actual owner drives the car. If he accelerate at 5000 rpm when the engine is cold, go away from this car. Diesel engine have to warm up if you want to be trouble free.
I did 2000 kilometers of highway with this car and it's a pleasure to drive. Gas consumption is amazing (average 6,2 liters for 100 kilometers) and you can cruise at 140 Km/h with enough power to go faster if you need (top speed is 200 Km/h and you can go easily to 185 in a quick burst).
Regards,
Mathias
