I've solved back pain problems in several cars by realizing that it is the steering wheel distance that can cause you to reach forward slightly and eventually causes the back pain just as you described. My solution has been to shorten the distance between my shoulders and the wheel by one or more of the following: move the seat forward, telescope/tilt the steering wheel if possible, move the seat back forward (allows your legs to remain stretched since the seat bottom remains fixed), change you hand position to lower on the wheel.
For the 9-3, I was forced to do most of the adjustment by moving the whole seat forward, thus cramping my legs a bit, but relaxing my back. I managed to move the seat back a little by changing my hand position on the steering wheel. I used to rest my hands on top in my previous car; now I grip the wheel around the flat spots just above the center of the wheel. It takes some getting used to, but has struck a good balance for me. (A tilt wheel would have been the best solution... I hear that's coming on the new 9-3.)
Good luck.
