AM on the SAAB 9-3 radio is very weak and you might even be hearing high pitch static on freq. 810-890. The static always went away when I turned off the vechical but let the key in to listen after about 30 seconds. Something about the computer in/out on the top connector cable crossing the antenna cable. The dealer could never explain it but I was able to reproduce with a cheap am portable tuned to 850 sitting on top of the dash just above the CID.
I found number one is to make sure the antenna lead is really tighly attached. Since SAAB uses what I call a NUB connector its real easy for it to come losse.
The other is the grounding of the antenna in the back. The gound wire is connect to the frame where its already painted and they use a 4 prong washer to cut through the paint to make the ground.
One other is that if your antenna was ever not retracting or extending fully and they had to replace your mast you might have metal filings from the motor in your power antenna casing which would require the replacement of the antenna motor. This is rare but it does happen.
I hope this helps.
