I posted earlier about having steering wheel vibration. I only realized what the problem was after my right front tire blew out on the highway at night. Bad experience made worse because I didn't have a flashlight to be able to see the lugs or flares to warn oncoming drivers. I bought my 99 9-3 used in January and the OEM Michelin MXV4's were not in the best shape with only 23K miles on them. As a part of the 30K service I got them rotated by the Saab dealer. After that, the car pulled to the left severely. Saab then suggested I get an alignment to fix the problem. 2K miles after the alignment, the steering wheel shake started and gradually progressed into front end shaking at higher speeds. After I took off the blown tire, I noticed the problem. On the inner part of the tire (not visible when looking a tire on a car) there was a 6 inch threadbare spot. I don't know if this was due to the tire being bad at first when it was rotated or when it was aligned
The local Saab dealer wants $178 / tire to install new Michelin MXV4
(195/60 R15)...I laughed and told the guy he was nuts. Those V rated tires took a beating. After 35K, they all have worn treads. I have also saw posts on this bb about buying high performance summer tires from tirerack and keeping a winter set as well. I don't need a winter tire because we don't get much snow in the mid atlantic states. I want to get a T or H rated all weather touring tire that can actually handle some bad weather. I have read many positive reviews on the Michelin X-one brand and was wondering whether putting a T rated 80,000 mile tire on my car is a bad idea when the OEM's were V rated. I understand that I am sacraficing cornering performance at high speeds but a tire that is worn down to barely no tread after 30K miles won't give you any traction during cornering either. And I also barely ever travel in excess of 85 MPH so I don't really see a need for V rated tires that my dealer insisted on selling me.
So...Is the Michelin X-one a bad choice? Reviews I have looked at (Tirerack.com and Consumer Reports) rate it very well. I am just wondering if it will be good for my 9-3. Thanks.
