I had mine on jack stands for a month or so, before my winter transport died and I had to splurge on a set of snow tires. (why was it on stands you ask? Dealer had to attempt to refinish my wheels...) Anyhow, I had the 'U' ones you mentioned, and althought it was a bit of a pain to position them such that they didn't do much damage, they did work. I raised the car with the jack, slid the jack stands underneath on a relatively flat portion of the car, and lowered. Someone on this BB mentioned putting a flat piece of wood between the 'U' and the bottom of the car, and that seems reasonable.
I'd do it myself...having a set of jack stands and a torque wrench can be handy sometimes.
Let me know how the SAS works out for you...I'm thinking of trying it myself.
