When the right amount of torque is applied to these "stretch" bolts, they should not pass over the edge and become deformed.
But if the bolt have been made of substandard material and a too high torque is applied, the bolt will become useless. Even for retorquing.
As for what the "industry standard" have been for years, almost no car manufacturer say to reuse old bolts.
This have been the common stand point for at least 20 years with combustion engines. And maybe longer.
Most of us indys, haven't followed those directions because it haven't been a need to replace the bolts (because of the extra strenght built in).
Some exceptions occurs though. Like the Volvo diesel engine, and now the Saab V6 engines. Those head bolts are tighten to a torque that is beyond what I feel comfortable with (you know the feeling when you have been doing things for years, and you have it in your back that this is not right). So I put new ones in on those engines.
The old 4 banger from Saab seemed to have pretty sturdy bolts, so I had no problems reusing them.
But not anymore with the "new" ones.
Certainly, if Saab finds out that you have retorqued the head, the warranty is over. At least forleaks from head gasket.
