The new combination key/remote does have a shorter range. In fact, when the switch was made, the remote reciever in the car was upgraded to be more sensitive so that the range wouldn't be so bad. Therefore, upgrading to a new key/remote in an older car would give you a fairly short range, probably not much more than 20 feet. Supposedly you could get a new "long range" receiver to go along with your new key/remote to keep your range, but that would most likely be very expensive. This info is from a discussion we had at the Viggen Flight Academy dinner over a year ago, so I think it's pretty accurate.
I've heard some people say that it's easier to catch a shirtsleeve on the new larger key/remote, especially in a manual car, but I don't know how true this is.
