Read the same thing in Autoweek. It seems like the next logical step for GM to take with the ailing Saab since GM owns a portion of Subaru. Sorry to say that I will not be buying one if it happens though. Somehow when GM gets involved things get lost and the ideals behinds a good intent are misplaced. My friend has a WRX and the cars really scoots and hangs onto corners quite well with AWD, but you can tell the R&D and money is spent on the engine and drive train because the car is very tinny and doesn't feel truely bolted together, but then again, that's what $25K buys.
I've seen some paralles in the GM and Sube lineup. Look at the Avalanche and Subaru Baja (AKA - Brat). These vehicles have many similarities, right down to the cheap plastic cladding that runs all around the vehicle. Hopefully the Swedes still have a say in the Saabs to come, otherwise we might be looking at Saabs that are nothing more than rebadged Daiwoos. With too much GM influence we can look forward to the the many success stories that GM has claim to fame showing up in the cars we appreciate:
Vega
Chevette
Corvair
Oldsmobile (are they dead yet?)
GM trucks with saddlebag gas tanks (AKA - bomb on wheels)
Aztek - a beautiful car, yeah right
Cimmeron
Daiwoo (spelling?)
the list goes on and on.
Happy Saabing, uh, Happy Suschi-Saabing
