I've never heard this analogy before. However, to me it would seem more accurate that your analogy applies to cars with forward weight bias (normal pendulum) verus rear weight bias (inverted pendulum), as opposed to simply the location of the drive wheels.
Sometimes the two are correlated. I.e. classic porsche 911 has rear drive and also a heavy rear weight bias. Saab 9-3 has front drive and heavy front weight bias.
However, the two aren't always correlated. S2000 is rear drive, but I believe just about a 50/50 weight bias. I'm sure there are FWD examples as well which are neutrally balanced with respect to weight distribution.
Like I said, I'm not sure because I don't exactly understand how the analogy is applied to a car on a slippery road (understand how the principle applies to rockets, wall clocks, or baseball bats). Is there assumed rotation about one particular end of the car? It seems if we swapped the end of assumed rotation, then the more stable pendulum configuration might also swap.
Cheers,
