I'd say you don't need a dealer to replace a muffler. I just replaced my whole exhaust system from the cat. converter back, and it took less than 2 hours; Midas will take much less time than that to replace just your rear muffler if need be (might be a weird part to fit with the stock hangers though, but you can order it yourself). You might as well check your whole sysetm for general rustiness at your New England mileage; it might be more cost-effective (laborwise) to replace it all now than a piece at a time. Just ask them not to weld it all together permanently, as it can make future repairs a pain.
Another thing you might want to check for before you spring for new parts is leaking at the exhaust clamps and joints. After you start the car, slap a rag over the back of the tail-pipe, and try to locate any loud leaks. My stock system sprung a few leaks at the intermediate pipe joint which went away for a few months with a simple adjustment and clamp retightening. Of course my rear muffler/pipe sprung some genuine salty winter rust holes, and I finally installed a stainless system.
Good luck!
