ABS and driving school

ABS - what a great invention. Driving school - my wife and I went to a short (one day) thing put on by another car company (one with three letters for the name) where we learned many things including avoidance techniques. (Ex. the "deer in lights" syndrome where you are focused on those brake lights growing larger and larger in your vision till you smack into them, vs. learning to look for your 'escape route' instead.) This morning I used them both. Exiting onto the interstate, the beginning of the ramp has a wall to the right. I was looking left (I had to yield) for traffic, all clear, look in front again and there is the back end of an old POS Pontiac Bonneville *backing up* towards me. Turns out there was a wreck on the interstate and the traffic was at a standstill. This gentleman decided he was just going to back up and get back on the secondary road he just left. I hit the brakes, ABS kicks in (wet road), and I saw my escape route as a quickly narrowing space between his car and the wall. I turned into it while braking and just managed it. Without ABS there's no way there wouldn't have been a wreck. Calm down, take a sip of coffee, merge into interstate traffic (which wasn't so bad after all). Whew. Can I go home now?
