what is up with the tires

A few months ago when I brought my 99 9-3 in with a vibration in the steering wheel my dealer technician told me three things: 1. I needed new tires 2. I had one slightly bent rim, not worth replacing, and 3. I should really replace my tires with the same kind -- Michelin mxv4s, $780 a set. I decided to have an independent place put Pirelli p4000s on instead for about half the price. Well, my steering wheel still vibrates so I brought it back to the dealer to inquire about getting a new rim and the tech tells me it's the Pirelli's that are causing the vibration and the only way to fix it is to replace them with 4 mxv4s. In fact, I was chewed out for putting the pirelli's on (did'nt this happen to Jerry Seinfeld?). I have never heard of any such nonsense. Am I being had or do I really need the mxv4s? They are lousy in the snow.
