I drove a stock viggen for over 10K miles so far and my impression has been the range of MPG variance is pretty big.
From the worst case:
A VERY spirited drive at night in local roads with AC on w/o caring about MPG: around 17.
When in very heavy highway traffic (stop and go for a long time w/ AC on), I got about 18 to 19.
Next, when driving totally local lighted roads, I range from 20 to 28. 20 when I accelerate just like any viggen driver is expected to w/ AC on, and 28 when I'm concerned about efficiency, and shift up early around 2000rpm w/o significant acceleration and no AC.
Last, the highway driving: ranges from 23 to 35. 23 when average speed is a three digit. When crusing around 75, I get around 30. When crusing b/w 60 and 65, I regularly get as high as 35 even w/ AC on.
From my experience, Saab efficiency is really versatile. You can burn if you want and need some power, but you can also save alot if you want to. It's probably the major advantage of a turbocharged small engine as Saab originally intended. I love the versatility, but I admit the 'spirit' tempts me a little too often ;-)
