If I could have a second car in the garage, it would be made in Stuttgart. (Given only one, I'd keep the Saab, because Porsche can't compete in versatility).
I'd skip the 944, and go to end end of the line with a '94 or '95 968, then use the spare cash to slap a turbo on there. There's a tuner in Arizona who specializes in this.
If you want to be a true Porsche purist, it must be a 911. The 964 turbo ('91 to '92) is probably gonna be in excess of your $30k price cap though, so you'd have to step back to an '88 or '89 3.3L turbo. They're beautiful cars - classic Porsche.
Either way, hope you got some budget for maintenance. You must find a competant Deutsche mechanik named Rolf, Gunter, or best of all, Ferdinand. And you should plan on paying him $2-3k annually to keep the beast tame.
