VW used to offer the Corrado with a supercharger (1990 thru 1992 if I remember correctly). This was a very unique design as it was a scroll type compressor. To my knowlege this was the only application of a scroll type compressor as a supercharger on a car.
I owned a 1990 Corrado, and off the line to about 30 MPH it would eat my 99 9-3's lunch, but after that the 9-3 will out run the Corrado hands down.
The supercharged Corrado engine had so much low end torque that you could run at 1000 RPM in 5th gear without lugging the engine. Try that in a 9-3...
I believe that Toyota offered the MR2 as a supercharged car during the same time period, but I don't know much about it.
Cheers,
-Steve
