I could see the foam on the back dissolving if you do that too many times (if the 9-3 mats still use foam backings), but it shouldn't affect the carpeting or the edging. Whenever mine get dirty, I just lay them out in the driveway, scrub them with some automotive upholstry cleaner, and rinse them off with a sponge. They dry in the sun within an hour.
