Bill,
From the experience I had measuring and analyzing my Viggen after I had some bent axle concerns, I figured out the following:
My car's rear axle is off a bit such that the camber angle on the right side. See the link below. My tire wear is even, just a bit more pronounced on the rear tires. The rears have been on since April 2002 and while both are pretty beat up, my right is worn down just a bit more on the inside edge.. about an inch or so. I run Toyo TS-1s.
However, if the toe angle is out, as in a bent wheel, causing osicialltion between toe in and toe out, or a misaligned hub, this could cause some real odd wearing... very uneven, more along the lines of cupping and/or chaffing of the treads.
I would check the toe angles. There are a few handy methods that you can do to ballpark your toe angle... Search the internet, or if you can dig up a vernier (or micrometer) and some lasers, and then you can fix yourself a very accurate measurement rig.
Word of warning... a new rear axle costs a fortune, so I hope that your problem is at the wheels, not the axle.
Best of luck,
Adam
