Dear Saab --
After 60k miles and two heater box replacements/repairs at my local dealership (both while in the warranty period), the heaterbox in my 1999 9-3 has failed again. This time when I contacted the dealer they told me it was out of warranty and I could pay them to diagnose/fix the problem. I decided to look at it myself and took apart the box. I discovered that the entire box was cracked in 3 places, and that the middle fan speed-control switch showed cracking throughout the housing. This satisfied me as far as what was wrong with the vehicle. I understood my car was out of warranty, and even though this was clearly a poorly manufactured and early failing part I decided to just purchase a new switch from the dealership. Seemed like a good solution until I discovered that there is no such switch available, I need to purchase the entire heater control box. $175. $175. $175!!! $175 for a new box because you didn't make a part that would last.
I contacted the dealership again and tried to get sympathy and was told warranty was warranty and that I was pretty much SOL, regardless of how many people on the internet had had similar problems/failures. I contacted saab usa customer service and was told since I had taken the box apart myself, they would not be willing to even look into reviewing replacement of the box. They would also not be able to try and locate just the switch, their best recomendation was to take the car to the dealership and have them repair/replace the box. The dealer quoted me about $800 for this option.
In short... screw you saab. You can bet my next car will not be one of yours.
