Cornering lights when in Reverse? [2001]

I know that the cornering lights on 2001 USA models were not activated due to some jurisdictions restricting their use. But I seem to remember that
they would come on when the car is in reverse gear (like the C900 we also have) after I bought it. But now they don't light up at all. Checked the bulbs and they're OK. What do other folks notice?
And is there any DIY method to reactivate the cornering lights to come on with the turn signals?
Thanks!
