Only the Saab changer will integrate directly

For the '01 model year (same as '00 model year that I have), the Saab head unit and the Saab CD changer were manufactured for Saab by Pioneer. The problem is that the head unit communicates with the changer via a proprietary communication protocol that other changers cannot speak, not even another Pioneer changer. This was viewed as a security feature because it makes the changer less desireable to steal, since it will only work with the Saab head unit.
You could use an aftermarket changer that transmits an FM signal and tune that in on the Saab head unit radio, at the cost of less fidelity in the sound instead of direct connection to the changer connector in the hatch.
If you buy a new Saab changer, they are pretty expensive, but you can get a used changer if you keep your eyes open in the classifide ads here, or even on eBay. The key to watch out for with a used changer is that it MUST have properly "divorced" first from the original Saab (this is a procedure done by an authorized Saab technician using the Saab Tech II diagnostic tool). If the changer is not properly divorced from the original Saab, it will not function when installed in a new Saab. The installation process is straightforward, but the Tech II tool must be used again to "marry" the changer to the head unit in your Saab.
