Does the needle go up at all? Also, what year, how many miles?
The normal signs of the stat failing is temperature goes UP when car idles or in start-stop traffic, then DOWN on the highway. Especially in cold weather the air keeps the radiator cold, and the thermostat does not cycle normally to maintain the engine temp where it should be. When you get off the highway, the temp rises again, at least a little. Search for thermostat on the NG900 board, they fail often.
In any case, if you have a CEL, it is a good idea to have the codes read. Anything else is just a guess.
