I'd have to agree with you on the safety hazard issue, and I too, will file a complaint with the NTHSA. I had a similar situation when my DI cassette failed at 53,000 mi ('99 9-3). While there is no "good" time for this sort of thing to happen, unfortunately for me, it was the a.m. rush hour. I was traveling 65mph in the far left lane on a three lane highway when the DI cassette failed, causing the car to lose all power. I was fortunate to be able to negotiate the car over to the right hand shoulder without incident. After towing to my dealer for repair, I was further dismayed to be hit for a $600 bill.
After reading the other postings in response to your situation, I also agree that SAAB should admit they have a problem, and slap a new one in the car (before it fails) while the car is under warranty, or better yet, have their rocket scientists re-invent the darn thing so it will last a while longer. What are the other manufacturers doing to accomplish the same objective? (Add the DI cassette to the list, along with the head gasket and idler pulley, to the list of things that sounded good, but...)
