broken hatch lock

It appears that yesterday, my hatch lock broke.
When I press the lock/unlock button, the lock motors makes a buzzing sound, but it seems that nothing latches on. This is not the normal "click-click" sound. It sounds like a gear is stripped. So now, the hatch remains unlocked, even if I lock the car. (the alarm still works...)
In this weather, I can't spend too much time looking at it...so i'm asking here...
Any experiences on the hatch locking mechanism?
