I realize that you are mostly concerned about good use of space, but just in case you had some concerns about damaging the DIC, here is a story. Coming back from a ski trip (on her own) my wife needed all the space in the trunk for other stuff so she put the DIC in the Thule Box on top of the skis. It is an old box (from three Saabs ago). There was a very strong cross wind (up to 90km/h) The hinges partly failed, the box opened enough for the DIC in its box to fly out while she was travelling about 110 km/hr. She heard it go and saw it in her rearview bouncing down the highway. She went back for it. The next week our original DIC failed. We put the flying DIC in and it has worked perfectly ever since.
