Nick, no offence intended, but the HOT ECU box will work in a NG900. Perhaps there are some functions that will not work, but your statement that it will not start and is not possible is incorrect.
The reason that I state this is I am currently running the ECU from a HOT 9-3 in my 1997 900SET 5-spd. Car has started everytime since install, and I purchased this over a year ago. And yes, the increase is noticeable. I first got the idea from Damien who is running it in his 98 NG900, which was suggested from his Saab tech. I was hesitant myself, but it works!
I am sure that it is not as good as a "proper" aftermarket ECU, but at less than 20% of the cost of a "tuner" ECU, it was good at the time. My next set of mods will include the ECU, of which I will most likely be contacting you to order. But adding the HOT ECU is possible, and a good upgrade to help determine if you would like to shift to an aftermarket ECU eventually. It also allows you to send yours to be programmed.
Gripen, feel free to email me if you have any further questions. I do have the HOT ECU (Saab part no. 5171699) for sale, that was listed in the classifieds. Thanks.
Sean
