This might only apply to 4 cyl engines; I don't know for sure (Anders?). Using TSN for my initial search, then verifying with my favorite local Saab garage, it seems as though the thermostat & Engine Coolant Temperature Sender (ECTS) should be changed somewhat regularly. Mine failed somewhere between 55k-60k miles after nearly 7 yrs of use. Since it takes us about 4 yrs to put 30k miles on this car, I plan on adding it my major service items list.
I hate to think what could've happened if I hadn't been using Mobil 1 5W-40. Also, it was only because I was having the oil analyzed that I realized there was a serious problem going on. Obviously, I'd recommend changing these components every 30k mi, & only use a premium (PAO/Group IV) ACEA A3/B3/B4 (E3/E4/E5) full syn (Mobil 1 or Amsoil) in your 4 cyl turbo.
The link below takes you to my oil & part failure analysis.
