I began to notice a faint rattle in the upper left side of the engine about four weeks ago, or so.
When cold, the sound is not audible, when at normal temp. the sound is most pronounced at or near idle, when engaging to D/R (98 900 SET Automatic with 68 000m).
I replaced the belt/pulleys a while ago, and I ran the motor without the belt, rattle still comes on. A mechanic at a Saab authorized shop listened to the engine with a stethoscope and concluded it was timing chain. I took the valve cover off and the sprockets look great, the chain is tight, and the top is very clean, no sludge etc.. Timing chain tensioner is 7 teeth out – 5 marks on the back, and the oil pressure relief valve looks great except for two microscopic scratches.
Am I correct assuming this must be balance chain noise?
The upper chain guide in the valve cover had little sign of wear, and little play, could be moved back and forth about 1mm or so. I plan to replace it as well. How do I remove it from the valve cover ?
I have already ordered all the sprockets/guides/chain and will proceed with the project over the next several days. Plan to push the engine over to remove the timing cover. Any advice and insight kindly appreciated.
