95 900T 3dr cranks but no start, dead instruments

Hi all,
Longtime 9000 wrencher, now looking at a possible el-cheapo 900T for kicks (maybe upside my head???). I do mean, el cheapo.
The car in question is cranking like a champ but does not catch and run. We had it running for a period with the throttle wide open, but it was rough and died immediately on closing the throttle, with no firing in subsequent attempts.
At the same time, there's nothing from the instruments, except for a brief second or two.
I know of the usual DI cassette issues, and can swap one from one the my 9000s with no problem to try that, correct? Past that, I'm hoping it's an ignition switch problem or the like.
But I've seen mentions in my (brief) search of the archives of clusters going down. Does this in any way affect the running of the car? What are the details of the problems?
Many thanks in advance for any pointers you can offer. I'll be hopping up there again tomorrow with DI cassette in hand to see how that goes, in hopes I can drive the thing down to my house under its own power at least.
