Crazy electrical gremlins....

Ok, the "parts car" has its other issues besides the mechanical ones -- here's your chance to show your comprehensive electronics knowledge, folks!
Symptoms: Intermittent functioning/non-functioning features....
* Instruments usually dead (no lights, no readings, no odometer). Sometimes they flicker on and off, sometimes stay on for awhile, but they come and go.
* Power seats intermittent
I'm guessing some other functions may be fluctuating as well but am not aware yet.
Now, I've been assuming that the instrument cluster itself is fritzed, and perhaps the seats issue is simply something else at the same time. But all this seems to hint at maybe a ground issue somewhere?
I'd love to hear any suggestions for where to try. I've already replaced the ignition switch, and checked the grounding points below the A-pillar, which seemed to be okay. Note that the essential info (oil pressure warning light, check engine light, etc) do continue to function regardless of the status of the rest of the instruments. And seats will come back to life after a few minutes generally.
Any ideas?
