IATN stands for International Automotive Technician Network. We are a group of people, 48,927 technicians from 136 countries (at writing) that help each other by posting questions on a E-mail message board, and others offering helpful trick of the trade or pure facts to help you repair the car.
The normal batch for a day is about 15-20 e-mails just regarding European cars (I opted out of getting the Asian and Domestic lines of car questions).
Anyway, in today's batch was a post from a technician that had problems with a 2000 9-3 and he posted the fault codes that his scantool retrieved.
Below is a partial copy of his text.
All codes are valid Saab codes but none of the descriptions that he list is even close to the Saab description of the same code number.
_____________________ ORIGINAL MESSAGE _____________________
These codes have occured at various times while on a 20 mile
road test. Vehicle actually stalled at highway speed then
started right up. Initial code was P1264. The others happened
during road test and start-up after sitting for about 3 hours.
Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks.
___________________ TEST AND REPAIR DATA ___________________
COMPUTER CODES AND DESCRIPTIONS
P1251- air mixture solenoid circuit malfunction P1260- theft
detected-vehicle immobilized P1261- cyl#1 high to low side
short P1264- cyl#4 high to low side short.
Below is Saabs explanations of the same codes.
P1251 Throttle motor. Full PWM in closing direction. Note, may set if mechanism is not reseted.
P1260 Throttle return spring. Too low force. Note, may set if mechanism is not reseted.
P1261 Throttle binding
P1264 Throttle open when pedal is released
So you can see that generic scan tools have one description of the code and a Saab scan tool would maybe come back with another set of numbers.
This going to be a problem when someone maybe using a Saab scantool generated fault code and finding the help from generic sources or someone posting a generic code and a Saab tech looking up the Saab translation of the code.
Below is a translation of your original code from a C5 Corvette list.
P1652 Powertrain Induced Chassis Pitch Output Circuit.
Not hardly any resemblance to neither yours or mine description of that code.
So tread lightly on the road with scantools and codes.
By the way, for a mere $3000.00 you can own your Tech 2 scantool. They are constantly on sale on auction sites.
Good luck
Anders
