First, search the archives. There are many, many fuel pump posts. For example, see link below and http://www.cooliemail.com/saab-fuel-pump.html. Other than the latter, I did not find any step-by-step photo diagrams of the job.
I am doing this job right now in my driveway. It is awkward and very smelly but doable if you have good DIY skills. I'm half done (pump out, new one just arrived, will finish on Saturday, I'll post again). Be prepared to get very smelly and do it outside. I found a few rusted hose clamps which slowed me down a bit; prep the job first by spraying all with PB Blaster. I have the car on jack stands at the two rear jacking points. I am on the 2nd notch on my stands and for most jobs I'm just on the first. Unless different on your car, you do not have to disconnect the exhaust. The exhaust runs on the left side of my car and there is plenty of clearance. The tank has to be slid down and to the right, as part of it would otherwise be blocked by the exhaust.
The 2 things I was most worried about turned out not to be a big deal. (1) The fuel lines are removed by GENTLY bending the yellow tabs on the top of the pump asssembly and pulling straight up on the lines. Don't bend too far or hard or they will break. One did for me; not a big deal since replacing the pump. (2)The notched "washer ring" that holds the top of the pump in place is supposed to require a special tool. I got it out using a screwdriver and GENTLY tapping it with a hammer. Didn't break a single tab on the washer ring or feel like that was even a danger. Some on TSN have warned against this; either I was lucky or just more gently. Anyway, some others recommend a giant channel locks or a pipe wrench to hold the outside of the washer ring. This would work but it turns out that only ChannelLock #480 here will fit and it costs a mint: http://www.channellock.com/acb/stores/1/category.cfm?SID=1&Category_ID=3). Home Depot gets $20 for #460 (a 16" channellock) and it doesn't fit!
Get a new fuel filter and the 4 special fuel filter washers before you do the job. Replace all when done.
Let me know if other questions. I'll post again by next Monday when the job is done.
