If the Flex pipe is bad it will turning black such as the ash you see at the end of the tail pipe. The baided cover hides the broken flex bellow inside. Look at the exhaust your self and make a desison on what to do. I would go the cheap way and replace the flex itself. You could also try a muffler shop and see how much they would charge for the repair. Shouldn't be to bad, but they might just weld a universal flex piece in place making it non serviceable in the future. The flex pipe is a piece that does wear and needs to be replaced once in while. I replaced mine and thought it was easy, but that might depend also on the weather where you live.

I remember it was easy, and thought that this type of exhaust assembly was outstanding due to its service ability.
