I have 1994 900 2.3 N/A. I opened up the valve cover and the removed the oil pan about two months ago. To my surprise, I found no sludge. This car is approaching 120K miles, and it spent all its life in the city. Lots and lots of short trips. Then, I did not care much for maintenance. Oil was changed once in about two years. No fancy oils, either -- whatever the shop had (usually, the cheapest). I did not have the habit of "warming up" the car before driving it. There was no garage. In other words, the car took just about every abuse the life at the city would send its way.
What I am aiming at, is that there seems to be very little, if any, correlation between sludge and bad maintenance. Newer 9-3's, some with owners who religiously changed oil every 5,000 miles and used the best synthetics, develop sludge. Some old neglected 900 don't. I think it is a design problem. Besides, the cars should be able to withstand city cycle.
Otherwise, they should probably sell them with stickers "Not for city driving".
