I recently replaced the resevoir cap in my car due to a faulty release valve. It was stuck open, so my system had not been holding pressure for who knows how long. I'm sure you all can guess what happened. I blew a hole in my radiator. I had my radiator replaced. I still had a slight leak... slight like... going through the entire contents of the reservoir in one day.
Took it back to the indie who had replaced the radiator, they tightened some hose clamps and replaced some other. Then I was down to the entire contents of the resevoir in two days. Then they replaced and tightened several hoses around my water pump. Now, I'm down to the entire contents of the resevoir in about four days. Obviously, I'm still not satisfied.
I believe, from reading many, many posts, that my head bolts have stretched and haven't been replaced or retorqued in the 160k mile life of the car. There seems to be seaping liquid (too transparent to be oil) coming from the driver side of the head/block seam or the valve cover seam (can't quite tell which). When I told my indie my plans to replace and retorque the head bolts, he said I should pull the whole head and replaced the head gasket because relieving the pressure on the gasket could unseat the seal and cause far more problems.
Is this really true?
Seems to me, from reading here, that retorquing the head bolts in nearly routine maintenance. He made it sound as if it were actually quite risky business. Can anyone explain the possible discrepancy here?
Thanks,
joshua
