97 900 SET-engine noise after timing guide replacement

I have gone through a lot of work recently in association with a head gasket failure. (A full write up can be read at the link below.) This work included R&R both timing and balance chains, along with worn guides. I started up the engine and I am hearing a whirring/whizzing noise from the timing area. It sounds almost like a super-charger noise which is just audible in the cabin but quite annoying if engine compartment is open. If I had to guess, I would say it is the new chains settling into their "home" on the guides - so I have a few questions about this.
1. Has anyone else heard such a noise after replacing guides, and if so, did it go away so I can relax.
2. Is it safe/feasible to remove the accessory belt and run the engine for a short time to rule out all the accessories bearings - just in case its not coming from inside the timing cover.
3. Is it safe/feasible to run the engine for a little while with the valve cover off, to better identify where the noise is from??
Thanks in advance to all, Drewski
